In Advance of Logic

This is the piece that led me into the curved beam approach to carving, using the natural growth of trees to create the statement. It was in my driveway for quite a while as I worked out a way of addressing a statement without diluting the strength of the original form. Pictures of the interiors of wooden ships inspired me, with the curved ribs supporting the stress. Master craftsmen had traveled the countryside looking for the right curved branches to piece together for the ribs.

I liked the folly that the artist?s hand was leaving a mark of craftsmanship and logic on something so natural. The piece skewers the pomposity of the idea of logical progression and our limited powers of ordering the universe.

Too big to store indoors, it has sadly rotted over the years and is no more.
